LDA Mission Statement

To promote the protection and enhancement of Detroit Lake

Come Sail Away

Come sail away
May 11, 2021

2021 is Detroit Lakes’ 150th anniversary and the city has been planning a year long celebration. One component of the celebration is the creation and distribution of 150 beautiful sail boat sculptures designed by local artist Hans Gilsdorf.  Thanks to BTD, a local manufacturing company, these sailboats will be climate resistant.

Individuals, companies, and organizations were able to sponsor a sailboat sculpture.  Upon sponsorship each sailboat was artistically decorated for each participating sponsor by area artists.  Upon completion of the decoration the sail boats reside throughout the city and around the lake.

The Lake Detroiters Association (LDA) proudly chose to sponsor one of the sailboats.  The sailboat, located at the new South Park, located on South Shore Drive, near Detroit Lake, represents the historical connection between the inhabitants of the city of Detroit Lake and the lake itself.  Our artist for the project is Suzanne Moser who has cleverly shown differences in the windward and leeward sides of the sail.   Our sailboat, resting in the new South Park, will serve as a reminder of a bond all lake shore owners share and the common goal to protect and maintain the water quality in the lake we all love, Detroit Lake.
