At LDA’s annual meeting on June 15, concern was expressed about some Personal Watercraft (jet-ski) users not complying with state regulations.
Keeping in mind that Minnesota laws and rules applicable to all watercraft also apply to personal watercraft, here are some excerpts of the regulations that apply specifically to jet skis:
• Operators or riders must wear life jackets
• Jet skis must travel at 5mph or less within 150 feet of shore, non-motorized or anchored boats, docks, swim rafts, swimmers
• Jet skis can not be operated earlier than 9:30 AM or later than 1 hour before sunset.
• Jet skis towing water skiers, tubers, etc. must have an observer or a factory-installed mirror.
• Jet skis may not chase wildlife, or travel through floating vegetation at greater than non-wake speed.
• Operators of jet-skis must be 13 years of age or older; operators 13-17 must have a watercraft operator’s permit.
